12 mart. I Remember – How Travel Memories Shape Our Photography
When I first got out of the country in 1996, I didn’t realize how lucky I was.
It was my first trip abroad.
I was fourteen years old, and like many teenagers at that age, I was not particularly excited about spending time traveling with my parents.
At that moment, the trip felt like an obligation rather than an opportunity.
Only many years later did I realize how important that experience actually was.
Sometimes the most meaningful memories in life only reveal their value much later.
And photography has a unique way of bringing those memories back to life.
The First Time Leaving the Country
Growing up in Romania during the 1990s was very different from today.
Traveling abroad was not something people did casually.
Even crossing the border into another country felt like a major event.
When my family planned that first trip outside Romania, I did not understand how special the experience would become.
For me, it was simply a long journey.
For my parents, it meant much more.
It meant opportunity, freedom and discovery.
Only years later did I begin to understand their excitement.

Travel Changes Perspective
The first time you travel abroad, something shifts in your perception.
You start noticing differences:
• architecture
• language
• food
• everyday routines
Suddenly the world feels much larger than the small environment you grew up in.
For many people, these experiences become the starting point for curiosity about other cultures and places.
For photographers, travel can also become a powerful source of inspiration.
Every new place offers new scenes, new stories and new ways of seeing the world.
Memory and Photography
One of the most powerful aspects of photography is its connection to memory.
A photograph can instantly bring back emotions and experiences that might otherwise fade with time.
A street corner.
A landscape.
A quiet moment during a trip.
All these small fragments become part of our personal history.
Years later, when we look at those images again, they reconnect us with the person we were at that moment.
Photography becomes a visual archive of our lives.

Why We Remember Certain Moments
Not every moment becomes a memory.
Many days pass without leaving a clear trace in our minds.
But certain experiences stay with us.
Often these memories are connected to:
• first experiences
• strong emotions
• unfamiliar places
• important life transitions
Travel often combines all these elements.
The first time you see a new country.
The first time you taste unfamiliar food.
The first time you hear a language you don’t understand.
These moments stay with us.
Photography as a Time Machine
Looking at old photographs can feel like traveling through time.
Images from years ago allow us to reconnect with places and people we may not have seen in a long time.
Sometimes those photographs reveal details we didn’t even notice when the photo was taken.
A small gesture.
A shadow on a wall.
A person walking through the frame.
These small details give photographs their emotional power.
They remind us that photography is not only about capturing light.
It is also about capturing time.

The Evolution of a Photographer
Many photographers start their journey without realizing how important photography will eventually become.
At first it is simply a hobby.
Something interesting to try during trips.
But over time photography can become much more.
It changes how you observe the world.
You begin paying attention to things that others might ignore.
The way sunlight touches a building.
The way shadows move across a street.
The way people interact in everyday situations.
Photography trains the eye to see.

Looking Back at Old Memories
When I think about that first trip abroad, I realize how many small details remain vivid even today.
The long road.
The excitement of crossing the border.
The unfamiliar landscapes.
At the time I did not carry a camera.
But today, those memories are part of the reason I continue to photograph.
Because photography allows us to preserve moments that would otherwise disappear with time.
Why Travel Inspires Photography
Travel and photography are deeply connected.
Travel introduces us to new environments.
Photography helps us interpret and remember those experiences.
Together they create something powerful.
Each trip becomes not only a physical journey, but also a creative one.
Through photography we transform experiences into images that can be shared with others.

Final Thoughts
Looking back, that first trip abroad was more important than I realized at the time.
It opened a small window into a much larger world.
Years later, photography became the tool that allowed me to explore that world more deeply.
Travel gave me the experiences.
Photography allowed me to preserve them.
And sometimes, when I look back at those memories, I simply think:
I remember.
