Sometimes a trip isn’t about chasing perfect light or iconic shots. Sometimes it’s about slowing down and enjoying a place you already know — but seeing it a little differently.
I’ve been to Nessebar before. This was my third visit.
The charm was still there: the sea hugging the old town, narrow cobbled streets lined with wooden houses, quiet mornings, long afternoons with a soft breeze and the scent of salt.
This time, I wasn’t chasing a photography project or trying to build a portfolio. I simply wanted a few images that felt like vacation — sunny, cheerful, full of color and warmth.
But I also wanted to experiment.
For years I’ve loved prime lenses but rarely traveled with just one. Usually, when visiting a new city, I prefer zooms. They are practical: you can frame quickly, adapt to changing scenes and avoid missing a shot.
But here, in a familiar place, I decided to try something different.
So I packed the Fujifilm X-S10 and the legendary Fujinon 35mm f/1.4, left the Sigma 18–50mm in the bag, and told myself:
One focal length. Nothing else.

Rediscovering the Joy of One Lens

It turned out to be surprisingly liberating.
At first it feels limiting. But after a few hours walking through the streets, something shifts.
With a 50mm lens you cannot be lazy.
If you want a tighter shot, you step closer.
If you want more context, you step back and look for new angles.
Photography becomes physical again.
I wandered through narrow alleys, circled around small fishing boats, leaned against walls and crouched low to isolate details — a door, a window, a fragment of color.
The lens forced me to move.
But more importantly, it forced me to see.
By the end of the trip something unexpected happened.
The photographs felt cohesive.
They belonged together.
The same field of view.
The same distance from the world.
The same quiet intimacy.
No random mix of wide and telephoto perspectives.

Light, Colors and Atmosphere

I visited Nessebar in early summer, when June slowly transitions into July.
The days were clear and warm.
Midday sun was strong but softened by the breeze from the Black Sea. Mornings were gentle and golden, while afternoons felt bright but never oppressive.
Even with the Mediterranean-style glare, the Fujifilm colors held beautifully.
The X-S10 sensor combined with the 35mm lens produced vibrant yet natural tones:
• deep blues of the Black Sea
• faded ochre of old wooden houses
• soft greens from plants spilling over stone fences
• colorful laundry drying under the sun
I mostly photographed in RAW, but occasionally checked the JPEG previews on the camera and loved them as well.
Fuji’s color science continues to surprise me.
The files already looked alive, requiring only minimal editing to feel vibrant and joyful.

A Simple Walking Tour Through Nessebar

If you’ve never been to Nessebar, it is a perfect town to explore on foot — especially with a prime lens.
Start early in the morning, just after sunrise, walking along the causeway connecting the mainland to the old peninsula.
The light comes low over the water and the fishing boats, creating quiet and atmospheric frames before the town is filled with visitors.
From there, wander slowly through the old streets.
Narrow cobblestones.
Wooden houses leaning gently toward each other.
Balconies heavy with flowers.
Look for details rather than big scenes:
• carved doors
• weathered textures
• small splashes of color from fabrics and shop signs
Nessebar is also famous for its ancient churches.
Some are ruins, others are still active. The brickwork, arches and textures look especially beautiful in soft side light.
Among the most photogenic are:
• St. John the Baptist Church
• Christ Pantocrator Church
Around midday, when the sun becomes stronger, move toward the harbor area.
White boats reflect the light beautifully on the water, and fishermen repairing nets create simple, authentic moments.
The 35mm f/1.4 works wonderfully here, isolating subjects with a shallow depth of field.
Later in the afternoon, walk along the sea promenade.
The breeze grows stronger, reflections shimmer across the water and golden light slowly begins to appear.

The summer atmosphere truly comes alive here.
End the day near the iconic windmill at the entrance of the old town.
The evening light behind it is subtle but beautiful.
It’s the perfect place to stop, breathe, and capture one final frame.

What I Learned

Using just one prime lens in a place you already know becomes a quiet lesson in photography.
It teaches patience.
It forces you to work a scene rather than simply zooming in and out.
The process becomes slower — but also more intentional.
For me, it was a reminder that photography doesn’t always have to be about perfection or chasing the “best shot.”
Sometimes it is simply about joy.
About curiosity.
About the freedom to explore a place without pressure.
If you want to try this approach yourself:
• On a first visit to a city, a zoom lens can be useful and flexible.
• But when returning to a familiar place, try bringing only one prime lens.
It will make you move more, explore more, and notice details that you would otherwise walk past.
And often the resulting photographs will feel more connected — like pages from the same visual story.

About the Fuji X-S10 and the 35mm f/1.4

The Fujifilm X-S10 was an easy choice for this trip.
It’s lightweight, reliable, and the IBIS system makes handheld shooting extremely comfortable during long walks.
And of course, Fuji colors are something I have come to trust completely.
The Fujinon 35mm f/1.4, even though it is not a new lens anymore, still feels magical.
There is something unique about the way it renders images.
Sharp, but with a gentle fall-off.
Warm and inviting.
With just enough character to make everyday scenes feel alive.
It’s not the fastest lens to focus.
It’s not completely silent.
But the images have soul.
And paired with the X-S10, it felt like carrying a small freedom machine.

Final Thoughts

This wasn’t a serious photography trip.
No sunrise chases.
No complicated planning.
Just summer, sea air and one focal length.
And yet I came home with a small set of photographs that feel exactly like those days.
Relaxed.
Bright.
Alive.
And honestly, that was enough for me.
